The Meiji Restoration, also known as the Honorable Restoration or Meiji Renovation, was an event in 1868 that brought practical imperial rule back to the Empire of Japan under Emperor Meiji. Prior to the Restoration, there were ruling Emperors, but this event restored the Emperor's practical abilities and consolidated the political system in Japan. The goals of the restored government were outlined in the Charter Oath, which was expressed by the new Emperor.
The Restoration resulted in significant changes to Japan's political and social structure, spanning from the late Edo period (also known as the Bakumatsu) to the beginning of the Meiji period. It also led to rapid industrialization and the adoption of western ideas and production methods in Japan.
